This year, Translation Forum Russia was attended by a delegation from AUM comprised of Anastasia Kurtukova, Senior Editor, Vera Karpukhina, Team Lead, and Tatyana Avrasina, CEO of AUM.
The 2018 Forum was held in Yekaterinburg and attracted almost 400 participants of the localization market: owners of translation companies, customers, software developers, educators and students.
Attendees discussed current developments in the Russian and global translation industries, cooperation plans, software solutions, as well as shared their experiences through presentations and reports.
Rapidly evolving technologies turned out to be the overarching theme of this year’s Forum, with numerous reports and round table discussions focusing on this subject. Representatives of Smartcat, Matecat, Memsource and AlisaTM made presentations on their project management solutions. Do you send your requests by email? Are newspaper ads still your primary vendor search tool? That is so 1999. State-of-the-art technologies that combine CMS and TMS systems can allow you to fully automate your workflow — from request submission to translation delivery.
It was only yesterday that artificial intelligence seemed like something out of a sci-fi film, yet today it’s taking root in all the areas of the modern world. AI technologies can “recognize” you in the crowd and show you ads based on your age and gender—a representative of Beabloo, a Spanish company, talked about the development of such technologies in their presentation. Neural machine translation (NMT) systems have now learned to recognize the rules of translating from different languages. If you’ve been using Goodle Translate over several years, you might’ve already noticed the improvements.
3 trillion gigabytes of new content are generated every single day. No human is capable of translating this amount of information. Unlike Google, whose NMT engine translates more words per minute than all human translators do in a year. According to Andrey Achkasov from the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia, it is expected that in the nearest future 80% of all translations will be performed by machines.
Recently, neural machine translation has been demonstrating an improved quality when translating into Russian. Based on Intento’s analysis of 11 MT engines, Yandex system is currently ahead of the pack when it comes to the quality in the English-Russian language pair.
Along with the quality grows the number of MT engines on the market. In the course of the Forum, such companies as One Hour Translation, EGO Translating, Saylon, Logrus IT shared their experience with MT and post-editing. Our company chipped in as well with a presentation titled “NMT + Post-Editing: Challenges and Opportunities”.
We have greatly enjoyed taking part in this year’s Forum. From year to year, it continues to grow in scope and importance for the industry. Next year, the event will be held in Saint Petersburg, and we are going to attend again to stay on top of the latest developments in the world of translations.
